Planetary Defenders Assemble!
Humanity has been living on this planet for thousands of years, alongside countless other creatures. It seems like a long time. Like this planet has always been this way. But before us, there were millions of years, when others ruled this world: the dinosaurs. Their species was around for much, much longer than we are at this point. But then, 65 million years ago, the non-avian dinosaurs were extinct. An asteroid impact wiped out this majorly successful species.
It can happen again. Earth is mostly in a quiet neighborhood, but here and there, big impactors will strike. It’s not a question of „if“. It’s „when“. Even much smaller bodies than the one that killed the dinosaurs, can be devastating for our civilization, at least locally. So what can we do?
In contrast to the dinosaurs, we have an advantage: we actually do science. We do observational and theoretical astronomy. We have the tools, to become Earth’s Defenders, if need be. How do we do it? How good are our chances? And what is the plan, if things get serious? Do we simply „Armageddon“ this problem or are there better ways?
