A lecture on dark matter and dark energy – the known unknowns of the universe. A mystery topic out of the ordinary, and a lecture out of turn on a Wednesday at 7 p.m. – Dr. D.C. Hooper will join the Neutrino Cosmology Day at TUM on 6 May, and we are very glad that a talk could be arranged at Volkssternwarte two nights before. Description

We are in an age of incredibly precise cosmological data coming from some of the most imaginative experiments humans have ever created, and yet ninety five percent of the universe is still a mystery to us. Dark matter and dark energy shape the universe, but they are still largely unknown. However, we have very good evidence for their existence and impact on the universe, which means they are not completely unknowable. There is hope that in the future we can know more about these fundamental ingredients. In this talk I will review what we know, and what we know we do not know, about dark matter and dark energy, and discuss future prospects for understanding this mysterious ninety five percent of the universe.

The lecturer

Deanna C. Hooper, PhD, is a theoretical physicist specialising in cosmology. They are currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Helsinki Institute of Physics, studying some of the strangest things in the universe like dark matter and gravitational waves. In addition to being a scientist and amateur astronomer, Deanna has a passion for science communication and hosts a weekly livestream show called Cup of Cosmology (https://cupofcosmology.com).
